The Peterborough County- City Health Unit has warned of an outbreak of invasive group A streptococcus. The bacteria is believed to have caused the deaths of three people. So far there have been eight local cases, including those deaths.

WARSAW, Poland—Authorities say a herd of bison in southeastern Poland is at risk from tuberculosis after one recently died of the disease. Spokesman Edward Marszalek of the forest supervisors in Krosno says six bison that appear to be sick will be shot and their bodies tested for the disease. Officials plan to inoculate the rest of the 300-strong herd.

The diagnosis of drug-resistant tuberculosis is still extremely low despite as many as half a million cases and 150,000 deaths from multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) in 2008 globally, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). "In 2008, there were 29,423 MDR-TB cases reported throughout the world by 127 countries. Prince William County health officials say someone from Freedom High School in Woodbridge has a confirmed case of tuberculosis. A letter from Principal Inez Bryant and county Health District Director Alison Ansher posted Thursday on the school's Web site does not say whether the ill person is a student, teacher or staff member. But the letter says the person is not currently at the school and is receiving treatment.

Baroness Thornton said that the unit was a "very important" part of the "find and treat" strategy for tackling TB in London. At question time in the Lords, crossbench peer Baroness Masham of Ilton said that funding for the "excellent" unit which goes around homeless hostels and prisons was due to run out in December. Lady Thornton, emphasising the unit's worth, said it had identified 400 cases of TB.

The number of diarrhoea patients continues to rise in the Dhaka city with the health experts blaming polluted supply water and ongoing seasonal hot weather for the outbreak of the disease.
